30 Favorite Children’s Book Authors

We *love* to read at our house and I think it is one of the most important things you can do with your child, starting from the very beginning!  Here is a listing of 30 of our favorite children’s book authors both classic and contemporary.  We’ve enjoyed these authors’ books during the time from birth to age 4 (the age of my oldest).  I tried to limit the list to authors who have written multiple children’s books that we love.  Most of these are picture book authors, but I threw in a couple of poets and chapter book authors as well.

How can you use this list?
  • I’m going to print the list to keep in our library bag so the next time we have trouble finding books while simply browsing, I can lead us in a good direction.
  • If you’d like to start doing author’s studies, this is a great reference list; just choose one author and read as many books as you can by them.  You can compare and contrast their different books, and hopefully your child will be able to start recognizing books by the author’s name and not just the title!
  • Add books by these authors to your home library.
  • If you need a gift for a baby shower or a birthday, any book by one of these authors would make a great one!

Enjoy! 🙂

We are fans of Julia Donaldson in this house, and she has lots and lots of books out. Some have been turned into film, and The Griffalo is a children’s opera! What an author study that would be!

    • Thanks, Lucy! We’ve read and watched The Gruffalo but haven’t read any others by Julia Donaldson, so we’ll definitely have to check some out. Which do you recommend? I’ll also be looking into the opera as that might fit in well with our Monday Musical series. 🙂

I’m an early childhood teacher turned mum from Australia and some of our favorites are Stephen Micheal King and Mem Fox.
Stephen Micheal King is both an author and illustrator and we love is fun illustrations and stories with there themes that encourage thinking.
Mem Fox has an amazing way with words and I have given lots of her books in board book form as gifts to mums of new babies.
