Bible Memory Resources for Preschool and Beyond! #giveaway

As an adult, I always find it so comforting when in times of fear, trouble, hurt, or uncertainty a relevant Bible verse pops into my mind and offers me a little glimpse of God and His care for me.  Recently, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” has been a great personal help and security.  As a parent, one gift I really want to pass on to my children is to help them hide the scriptures in their own hearts, and yet, at the same time, I found I didn’t know where to start.  Then I learned about Children Desiring God’s Foundation and Fighter Verses Bible memory resources and I knew I had found a perfect system for us!

About Children Desiring God
Children Desiring God offers God-centered resources for training the next generation.

I love this paragraph on their website under “Bible Memory” and think it sums up what they’re about quite nicely:

We believe that the life of faith is a fight of faith, and that believers must be armed for this fight.  This fight is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual principalities, so the Word of God is our indispensable sword.  Through memorizing and meditating on the Word, this powerful sword becomes readily available to us at any time, providing us with ever-present counsel, encouragement, and protection from the enemy of our souls.  Offering a variety of tools for preschool through adult, we pray that God would instill your heart with the conviction and yearning to memorize His Word so that it becomes a life-long practice.

Children Desiring God offer three main resources for Bible Verse memorization, which you can read more about by clicking the links:

  • Foundation Verses ($5)
    • 76 strategically chosen Bible verses for children in preschool through age 5
    • Short verses with picture prompts
    • “The vision of this set is to lay a firm scriptural foundation of basic Biblical truth that will pave the way for faith response, and to establish the habit of hiding God’s Word in the heart.”

  • Fighter Verses ($13)
    • Five-year memory program
    • Available in a two-ring binder with five sets of yearly verses (index card sized)

All of the resources are available in either English Standard Version (ESV) or New International Version (NIV).

There is also a Fighter Verse app available for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Kindle.

The app has the Foundation Verses as well.

More resources are offered at including a weekly blog as well as a resource library, including multiple free printable aids.

My Review
We have been blessed to review the Foundation Verses, the Fighter Verses, and the Fighter Verse app for iPad.  I found all of them to be quality resources for teaching Bible verse memorization.  With my own two preschool-aged children, my favorite resource thus far has been the Foundation Verses.  We have been practicing the verses by having the kids look at the pictures.  I like that the cards are on a ring clip so that we can just flip through them, or I can remove cards (which are numbered, so I’ll know where to put them back) and put them into a pocket chart for practice.

Our current set up is that we are reciting our verses during our morning calendar time, so after we’ve mastered a verse, I’ll add a new one to our pocket chart.

Each day, we recite all we’ve learned so far.  Another way we’ve used the Foundation Verse cards was to keep them together on the ring and recite them together as a family during our reading time before bed.  We adults have been having fun learning these right along with the kids, so don’t think these are “babyish” or “too easy.”  I think these are great to start with at any age and definitely help to build a strong foundation in God’s Word!!

When the kids are a little older (aka elementary-school aged), we will begin using the Fighter Verses.  I like how the schedule is laid out to learn a new verse per week, and is a five year program.  The app will be very handy to us at this point because it will actually read aloud the verse for you, and you can even have it continue reading repeatedly if that is a help for memorization.  It always work well for me personally!

Overall, I thought I would really like these products after having read about them online, and I’m glad to say that after using them for a few months, they have definitely met my expectations.  I am thrilled to have a ready-to-go system in place that is easy to use and my children enjoy.  I appreciate that it’s a very simple, affordable system and that it can be started as early as preschool.  We have really enjoyed learning the Bible verses together as a family.  Our littlest one wasn’t even three when we started, and she has often learned the verses quicker than the rest of us!  I especially love it when we are reading straight from the Bible and the kids can sometimes finish the verse for me because they already know it.

Thank you, Children Desiring God, for helping me to hide God’s Word in my children’s hearts!  My prayer is that it be a comfort to them for the rest of their lives, as it is so often for me.
