Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Alphabet Bath

Welcome to this week’s Alphabet edition of Wash & Learn!

After you read about our alphabet bath, be sure to hop over to see the fun bath time shared by Crystal on Bath Activities for Kids.

This week we were blessed by a visit from Oma, my mother in law.  She brought along a whole coconut as a treat and learning experience for Luke and Lilah.  Seeing the coconut inspired me to make a really fun letter bath for the kids: A Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Alphabet Bath!!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. is such a fun and rhythmic book to read.  We have read it dozens and dozens of times, so I knew the kids would love to have a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom storybook bath and I could sneak in some alphabet practice!

To set up the bath, I crafted a coconut tree trunk out of brown foam.  All you have to do is wet the foam and it magically sticks to the walls of the bath like a sticker.  Then I cut out coconut tree leaves from green bubble wrap.  I used a little packaging tape to secure them to the wall.

For the alphabet, I used a set of felt letters we already owned.  When wet, felt works like foam and sticks to the walls of the tub like stickers!  I also added a little blue food coloring to the bath water for a little more of a tropical feel.

Then I called the kids to hop in the bath!!  They pulled all the letters off the wall and into the tub with them and I started reading aloud our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book.  As I’d get to a letter in the story, they’d search the tub to find it and then have the letter climb the tree.

They loved the part where they got to swipe all the letters off the wall and back into the tub again!  We did all the letters twice.

After our fun with the alphabet, I gave the kids the two halves of the coconut I had saved for some more bath time fun!

One half split and so it wasn’t really a full half, but it made a great hat and also a boat to taxi the letters around the tub.

The other half of the coconut had three holes we had poked in it to extract the coconut water, and it worked great as a colander and a shower!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom bath!  If you haven’t read the story yet, add it to your reading list.  It’s so fun!!
