Creating Comfy Reading Spaces: Our Audio Book Listening Area

An audio book listening station is easy to set up and doesn’t take a lot of space.  Plus, a comfy area can help promote the desire to read!  I recently rearranged our listening area, which is now at the top of the stairs off of our bonus room, to be more comfortable and convenient for Luke, 4, and Lilah, 2.  We all like it much better now, so I thought I’d share!  Our area has
  • 2 Pottery Barn Anywhere chairs (a Craigslist purchase)
  • the smallest of a set of nesting tables,
  • a basket for the audio books (there are two pictured as we started with a plastic one and switched it out for the woven one)
  • and the boom box (wish I had placed the cord a little better for the photos…oh well!).
Sometimes L&L like to sit in their own chairs.
Lilah likes to listen without looking at the book sometimes.
Of course, her babies like listening, too!
Luke always likes to see the book, and he’s
really good at turning the pages at the right time!

Sometimes they like to sit together to share the book.
We may have to upgrade from chairs to a loveseat soon!
Getting cozy with a good book!
I traded out the plastic basket for this one
and like it much better!

An Audio Book Tip:
If you are worried about your child scratching the audio CDs with use, first be sure they understand the proper way to hold a CD.  Kids are kids though, so if you’re concerned, simply import the audio onto your computer (iTunes) so you can burn a new CD if you ever need to.  Or go ahead and burn a copy to begin with; keep the original in a safe spot and let the child have the copy.
