Great Music that Teaches Kids about God

We are HUGE Songs for Saplings music fans in this house!!  We started our collection several years ago with their very first CD, and now we own ALL of them!!  Last week my 4 year old asked one little unexpected question which reminded me what a great resource Songs for Saplings is for teaching kids about God.  Because of Luke’s question, I am sharing our review of their music with you in hopes you might find it as helpful as we have.

There’s also an amazing deal from Songs for Saplings at the end of this post.  They were more than obliging when I emailed them to ask about posting a review and this is the first time they’ve ever offered something like this, so I’m super excited to be sharing it with you!  We have personally found their music to be a real blessing to us, and I am very happy to share it with YOU!

If you haven’t heard of Songs for Saplings before, here’s a little background information:
Songs for Saplings first began in 2003 when Dana Dirksen began to set some scripture verses to music for her own children.  She released a CD of those songs to her friends and family (Songs for Saplings: ABC).  A friend suggested that Dana record a set of CDs for kids putting good theology to music.  That’s how the “Questions with Answers” series was born!

Songs for Saplings “believes that it is vitally important for kids to memorize God’s Word and to hear deep truths communicated in a way they can understand.  Music is a powerful way to help parents and teachers communicate what they believe to children. Each of our songs contains a Biblical truth, a scripture that supports it, and the reference for the verse. We want to help you train up your children in the way they should go with truths they will always remember.

My Personal Favorite
While we love the Song for Saplings: ABC and 123 CDs, my absolute favorite of their albums is the Questions with Answers series.  I will be the first to admit that I was hesitant to purchase the first one.  I thought it didn’t sound that exciting upon first hearing and reading about it, and I wasn’t sure we would like it that much.  My assumption was that it was basically the catechism set to music, and well, my vision of that just wasn’t grand to be honest.

But I am happy to say I was totally and completely wrong about it!  Of all their CDs, these are my favorites and they rank in my top 10 of ALL the kids music we listen to, which says a lot!  The music is catchy and sweet, and the message is EXACTLY what I want my kids to be hearing!  Not to mention, I really enjoy and get a lot out of them, too!  I couldn’t be happier that I was wrong about these CDs! 🙂

Why I am Writing This Review
We have owned Questions with Answers: Volume 1 for awhile now and despite playing it a lot when we first got it, it had been some time since I had played any of the Songs for Saplings CDs.  Out of the blue last week during a little home study our family was doing on the birth of Jesus, my 4 year old suddenly asked, “Who made God?”  I immediately was reminded of the Songs for Saplings: Questions with Answers: Volume 1 CD which addresses that and so many other questions so succinctly.

After I talked to Luke about his question a little, I pulled out the Songs for Saplings: Question with Answers: Volume 1 CD to reinforce it and we’ve been singing along with the songs all week!  You can listen to the songs here.  It is such an AMAZING resource if you are trying to teach your children Bible truths or are attempting to answer the sometimes difficult questions they may be asking!!!  It’s also an easy way to start hiding scriptures in their hearts.

About Questions with Answers from Songs for Saplings:
The Questions with Answers series is a 6-volume set (4 are currently available and the final 2 are in production) based on a centuries-old document called the Westminster Shorter Catechism.  The songs feature a question and answer about the Christian faith along with a supporting scripture and it’s reference number.

The titles of the albums give a clue as to the breadth and depth of the material covered in the 115 questions and answers:

The earlier volumes are geared toward younger listeners and the later volumes are more sophisticated in order to appeal to older children.  But all of the songs are designed to be enjoyable by all ages…even moms who will inevitably listen to the same CD over and over again in the minivan!

Dana has released the first four volumes of the six-volume series. These four albums have songs about who God is, His creation, why He made us, how sin entered the world, Christ and His work, salvation, justification, sanctification, the Ten Commandments, and the Bible. There’s so much deep content in these songs, but the music is written and performed in a very accessible way. The music is fun for kids and enjoyable for adults.

An Amazing Deal from Songs for Saplings
Thanks to Luke asking “Who made God?” and reminding me how much we love Songs for Saplings music, I contacted them to talk about doing a review post to share their work with YOU.  In addition to allowing me to review, they have graciously offered to let you buy Questions with Answers Volume 1 for 25 cents!!  Yes, a quarter!!

I, of course, had to ask why they would offer such an amazing deal to my readers.  The reply?  Over the summer, Songs for Saplings changed their pricing strategy; CDs used to sell for $12.95 plus shipping, so that it ended up costing almost $18 per disk.  Now all CDs are only $9 with free shipping.  The bottom line is that James and Dana didn’t want price to be a hindrance to families having access to Songs for Saplings music.  They feel strongly that even at a young age children can learn important truths about who God is and how He wants them to live.  Especially when you put those truths to fun and lively music!  So why would we offer Volume 1 to your readers for only 25 cents?  Because we want them to have Volume 1!

So there you have it!  I am as impressed with the company as I am with their music! 🙂

Help! My paypal payment posted, by no link for the download. Now what?

  • Tricia says:

I love the idea of catechism (Children’s Westminster Confession) put to music. We also love Ask Me Whooo. They combine usually 2 or 3 catechism questions and answers into one song.

  • Thanks so much. I’ve been meaning to try some of their music and we are now moving towards more mp3’s for buying and storing our music, so this offer couldn’t have come at a better time. We are all hooked and have had it on continuous loop for the last few hours! 🙂

I just saw this great deal posted through the Songs for Saplings FB page today, and I’m so glad to be introduced to your blog! As a former teacher with a preschooler and a toddler myself, I’m always looking for likeminded mommy blogs to follow!

Anyhow, I was wondering if you thought it would be legit to purchase several (12 or so) copies of the download at this price and burn as many CDs for the kids in my church class. Since we’ll be using some of the songs anyway, I thought it would be nice to have their own copies to listen to at home. Thanks!
