Personalized Lap Desks for L&L

While I’m on a crafty roll, I might as well show you another Michael’s impulse buy.  I had just read 1+1+1=1‘s Tuesday blog post entitled “Fun School Gadgets” when what should I see on sale out on the sidewalk in front of Michael’s but the exact little lap tray/desks that she mentioned!

They were on sale for $4.99/ea and I had my handy-dandy 25%-off-entire-purchase-including-sale-items-coupon (which is still good until tomorrow, Saturday, June 11th by the way), so I scored two for $3.74/each!  I let L&L pick out the ones they wanted.  Lilah picked sparkly purple and Luke picked sparkly blue.  We might have gotten a third for a certain cousin who has a birthday party tomorrow, but I can’t say for sure. 😉

When I got home, I must have been feeling pretty crafty because I made Lilah a bunch of hair clips AND I got the idea to decorate L&L’s lap desks with paint pens.  I did the lettering in silver to match the sparkles.

Here’s Luke’s:

(What is it about being potty-trained that makes kids want to run around in their underwear all day???)

Here’s Lilah’s:

They seem to like them a lot.  They’ve been using them on the floor so far as a raised surface to do various “work” — like activities from their Preschool and Tot Packs.  The pink boxes in the side pocket of the lap desks is a pencil box I also bought at Michael’s to hold their current Preschool or Tot Pack items.  They were $1.00/each, so I only paid $0.75 after the coupon–they were very limited on colors but I decided not to be picky. 🙂

I don’t know how well the paint will hold up on the desks, but it’s cute for now and L&L were excited to have their names on them!  As for the desks themselves, I think we’ll get a lot of use out of them.  Lilah has already proven they can take a lickin’ because she sat on hers and tried to ride it like a horse; the middle bent so that it completely touched the ground, but popped right back into shape without any issues once I removed the little cowgirl.  Thank goodness! 🙂

What are some of your favorite “school” gadgets?
