Photo of the Day: Giant Stag Beetle!

We spotted this large beetle on a nature walk today at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve (Cary, NC).  He was holding on to the branch of a small tree, upside down.  He looked dark in color, but with the camera flash, we were able to see he was actually pretty red!

After looking him up on the internet, we think he’s a giant stag beetle — the largest beetle in North America!  Pretty awesome find! 🙂

Nature walks make for great science lessons!
